The Kalka-Shimla toy train is a slow, historic narrow-gauge train that runs on a 96-kilometre scenic mountain track through the Himalayas. But now, for the time being, Indian Railways has suspended four toy train services on this railway line until August 5. Here’s what travellers need to know.
4 Kalka-Shimla Toy Train Services Suspended
The Kalka-Shimla railway line was built in 1903 during British rule and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The toy train is on the bucket list of almost every traveller visiting Shimla. But according to The New Indian Express, Indian Railways has suspended four toy train services on this railway line for 10 days until August 5. The decision was taken due to heavy monsoon rains and the risk of frequent landslides.
The suspended services include the 52451 Shivalik Deluxe Express (Kalka-Shimla) and its return service, the 52452 Shivalik Deluxe Express. The 52459 Kalka-Shimla Express and its return service, the 52460 Shimla-Kalka Express, will also remain cancelled.

Heavy Rains & Low Occupancy Led To The Decision
According to The New Indian Express, the services were not just cancelled to prevent inconvenience to passengers during the monsoon but also because of another major reason. Low passenger occupancy on these services has also contributed to operational losses. However, four other toy trains will continue to operate regularly on the Kalka-Shimla route.
On July 3, a landslide on the Kathlighat-Kano section temporarily halted train operations. The Shivalik Deluxe Express, which was travelling from Shimla to Kalka with 170 passengers, was stranded in the affected section. Restoration work took several hours and delayed the movement of other trains on the route.
Railway staff had to arrange buses for passengers, which added to extra expenditure and inconvenience. This is why the authorities decided to suspend four services during the monsoon season. The services may resume once the weather improves.
