The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat train is set to become the first of its kind to operate in sub-zero conditions. Unlike the standard Vande Bharat Express trains seen across India, this new variant has been purpose-built for the extreme weather and mountainous terrain of Jammu and Kashmir.
Vande Bharat Special Features For Cold Climate

The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat train stands apart for its ability to function in temperatures as low as -20°C. Designed and manufactured by the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the train has been tailored with several winter-specific upgrades to ensure safe and smooth operations.

The driver’s cabin is equipped with a heated windscreen, which prevents fogging and ice buildup while ensuring visibility during snowfall. The coaches feature automatic climate control systems designed to maintain a warm cabin temperature regardless of the weather outside.
What’s more, the undercarriage of the train includes anti-freeze protection for critical components like brakes and couplers, ensuring full operational safety even during icy conditions. The windows are double-glazed for insulation, and the doors are fitted with thermal seals to keep the cold out.
For passengers, this translates to a cosy and comfortable journey through the scenic yet frosty Kashmir Valley.
Heated Bio-Toilets And Plumbing System
What truly sets the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat train apart is its frost-proof engineering. The plumbing system and bio-toilets are equipped with heating elements to stop water from freezing — a common issue in high-altitude regions. These thoughtful enhancements make the train not just operationally efficient but also passenger-friendly throughout the year.
