As per a report published in The Economic Times, two residents of Dadar, Mumbai, sought compensation of a whopping ₹6 lakhs after claiming that they were served chicken momos instead of vegetarian momos at the Wow! Momo outlet in Sion in December 2020. They said the incident hurt their sentiments and disrupted religious ceremonies they had planned for the day. Not only that, but these two consumers and complainants, Gargi Joshi and Jitesh Mundhwa, also claimed that the food outlet failed to mention that the combo meal which they ordered could include chicken.

Complaint Dismissed By Consumer Commission

The consumer commission dismissed the complaint as baseless. It stated that the complainants failed to prove they had asked for vegetarian food. Moreover, their invoice indicated that they had ordered a non-veg combo, and the photo they submitted as proof did not show whether the food was vegetarian or not. Furthermore, the commission mentioned that the display board near the food joint mentioned that the combo could have both ‘veg and non-veg’ options. The commission also shared that the complainants failed to submit any details about the religious ceremony as well.

As per ET, Wow! Momo denied all these claims, stating that the customers had ordered a non-veg meal and also created a nuisance in the restaurant. The staff refunded the ₹120 amount and also offered a gift voucher worth ₹1,200. But both Gargi Joshi and Jitesh Mundhwa demanded ₹3 lakh each as compensation. The commission ruled in favour of the restaurant and dismissed the complaint. It also added, if they are strictly vegetarian, why did they order from a restaurant that serves non-veg food too?

The consumer commission decided in favour of the restaurant. They even said that a reasonable person should be able to tell the difference between veg and non-veg. What do you think, was it the right decision?
