South India is currently grappling with widespread disruption as relentless monsoon rains continue to batter key states. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in several districts. The downpour has triggered landslides, caused severe waterlogging, and brought daily life to a standstill in many urban and rural areas. Authorities are urging caution, with emergency services working around the clock to manage the situation.
Karnataka Rains Trigger Landslides And Flooding
According to The Times of India, landslides occurred in Chikkamagaluru and Hassan districts after continuous rainfall weakened the soil. Roads and farmlands were submerged, affecting both transport and agricultural activities. In Bengaluru, waterlogging blocked major roads, delaying office commutes and damaging infrastructure. The IMD has issued a red alert for Kodagu, Udupi, and other coastal and hilly regions, predicting over 200 mm of rainfall in 24 hours.

Local disaster management teams are monitoring landslide-prone zones and have already begun rescue and evacuation efforts in affected areas. Civic workers are clearing drains and removing debris to prevent further disruptions.
Kerala Sees Overflowing Rivers And Travel Disruptions
Kerala is also experiencing the brunt of the monsoon’s intensity. As reported by The Indian Express, rivers in districts like Idukki and Pathanamthitta have started to overflow. Authorities have closed down several tourist destinations and trekking routes due to safety concerns.

Heavy showers have caused tree falls and blocked major roads, affecting bus and rail services across the state. The red alert issued by IMD remains active in several districts, including Ernakulam and Kottayam, with warnings of possible flash floods in low-lying areas.
Tamil Nadu Braces For More Rainfall
Tamil Nadu, though initially less affected, has now received significant rainfall in its southern and western districts. The IMD has included Nilgiris and Coimbatore under red alert as monsoon clouds advance. Coastal areas like Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram are on high watch due to rising sea levels and strong winds.

State officials have advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea and have temporarily halted ferry services. Local authorities are also inspecting older buildings and schools to prevent any structural accidents due to the rains.
With the IMD forecasting more rainfall over the next few days, emergency teams are on full alert across South India. Evacuation centres are ready, especially in flood-prone districts. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed teams in sensitive zones to assist local administrations.
