This is an important update. The FASTag Annual Pass, which will be available from August 15, 2025, will not be applicable on the Samruddhi Mahamarg, Atal Setu, Mumbai-Pune Expressway, along with other state-run toll roads. While it promises smoother journeys, the pass also comes with a few limitations.
FASTag Annual Pass To Work Only On NHAI Highways
As per a report by Mumbai Live, the new FASTag Annual Pass will apply only to highways and expressways managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the pass will be available from August 15, 2025, on his X (formerly Twitter) account. Priced at ₹3,000, the pass is designed to make toll payments easier for private and non-commercial vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans. While the pass promises smoother journeys, it also has its limitations.
The pass will only work on NHAI-operated highways and expressways. It will not be applicable on highways under state government control, which limits its use to a great extent. In Maharashtra, it is valid at only 18 out of 87 toll plazas. The pass will also not be accepted on major expressways like Samruddhi Mahamarg, Atal Setu, Mumbai-Pune Expressway and other state-run toll roads. This restriction has drawn criticism from citizens.

Other Terms And Conditions Of The Pass
The pass also comes with other terms and conditions. As per Mumbai Live, users must maintain a minimum balance of ₹200 in their FASTag account at all times. The fee of ₹3,000 is non-refundable. If a user does not travel enough on NHAI routes, the recharge might go unused. This has raised concerns that the pass could go to waste for those who don’t drive long distances on NHAI routes frequently.
The pass will be linked to the vehicle’s existing RFID-based FASTag and will activate automatically once the vehicle comes within 60 km of a toll plaza on any eligible NHAI road. The pass is non-transferable, and vehicles with FASTags registered only on their chassis number will not be eligible.

While the FASTag pass can make road trips smoother, its limitations also make it hard to reach its full potential.Â
