Forget fancy plating and tweezered herbs because sometimes, greatness comes wrapped in a banana leaf or served on steel thalis. In the latest TasteAtlas Awards 2024-25, six Indian cities have been officially recognised among the 100 Best Food Cities in the World, with Mumbai landing into the Top 5 in all its fiery glory! Scroll on to know more about this list.

Mumbai Among Top 5 On The List

You know that feeling when your taste buds stand up and cheer? That’s what Mumbai does. It ranks fifth in the world, right after Italy’s pasta gang (Naples, Milan, Bologna, Florence). But Mumbai’s not trying to be elegant. It’s bold, messy, electric.

We’re talking about kheema pavs with extra butter, prawns, koliwada that crunch with attitude, and veg thalis that fill tummies and hearts. In Mumbai, you can eat breakfast in Matunga, lunch in Mohammed Ali Road, and dinner in Bandra, and feel like you’ve travelled the country without leaving the city.

India Bags 5 Other Positions

Amritsar bagged the 43rd rank on ‘100 Best Food Cities In The World’ list. This ghee-loving city is full of flavour and heart with kulchas that burst with flavours and lassis that make everything in life alright! You’ll find ghee in everything, and you won’t complain. Delhi stands at Rank 45 on the list. In India’s capital city, food is political, historical, and personal. Butter chicken was born here, and so were 3 AM chole bhature cravings. From Jama Masjid to South Ex, Delhi feeds you with no filters.

Ranking 50, Hyderabad deserves all the foodies’ attention. In this city, biryani isn’t just food, it’s emotion. There’s spice, smoke, tension, and finally, a soft dum rice climax that you’ll remember forever. Haleem and pathar ka gosht are Hyderabad’s metaphorical cherry on top, and we just can’t get enough of them.

At 71st rank is Kolkata, the city known for its culture, literature, and of course, food! The city lives and breathes delicious fish recipes and kathi rolls! And let’s just say they invented the “grab and go” long before sandwiches went international. For a sweet burst of flavour, a rosogolla is always around the corner! With its idli and dosa, Chennai secured the 75th rank. The crisp and crunch of the city’s cuisine is unmatched, and don’t even get us started on filter coffee! It doesn’t just wake you up, it energises you.

Who Is Ruling Globally?

Italy is ruling the world’s best food cities list and how! Naples, Milan, Bologna, Florence and Rome have captured five of the top six spots. And honestly? We are not surprised. They are the pioneers of pizza after all. Paris glides in at #7 with croissant in hand, Osaka does its umami magic at the 10th position, and New York leans on its diversity at number 12.

The world is finally zooming in on what we’ve known forever: Indian streets and eateries offer some of the greatest culinary magic on Earth.
With TasteAtlas’ recognition, Indian cities and cuisines are finally getting their long-overdue credit!
