India, Thailand, and Myanmar are developing a 1,400-km-long highway that will help link Southeast Asia with the country by land. And this will also give a much-needed push to trade, business, and tourism ties between the three countries.

99 per cent of the four-lane expressway which is based in Thailand is already complete. The Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, Nitin Gadkari, has said that the highway has witnessed a 70% completion rate.

The minister is yet to give details on the timeline for the completion and operationalization of the trilateral highway.

The highway is going to help connect Mae Sot in Thailand with Moreh in India via Myanmar. The India-Myanmar Friendship Road linking Moreh-Tamu-Kalmeya-Kalewa is also considered to be a part of this trilateral highway and is said to be 160 km long.

While it is yet to be seen how beneficial this trilateral highway would be for the people of all the countries involved, it would be safe to say that the trip won’t be cost-efficient. Rising gas prices would make the journey costlier than airfare.

Thailand has a visa on arrival for Indians. So, if you choose to opt for an air journey over road, you can look forward to enjoying a hassle-free visa process.

The highway promises immense improvement in terms of political, economic and tourism relations between the two main destinations and also with those who are a part of the route.

This road is going to support the exploration of important landmarks and cultural assets in the countries it connects.
