The number of current cases is 3,997, according to data issued for December 30, 2023; this is a lower number than the 4,091 announced on Friday. States like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and New Delhi have been reporting rising daily totals for COVID infections despite the steady drop.

Eleven cases in all have been documented in Ladakh’s union territory. Jharkhand and Manipur have both recorded one instance each. As far as the deaths are concerned, India has reported seven deaths: three in Kerala, two in Karnataka, and one each in Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh.

There have been 5,33,358 recorded deaths in India to date. As of December 29, a total of 178 cases of the JN.1 variant have been detected in India. The Health Ministry has provided data showing that Goa, Kerala, and Gujarat have recorded the highest number of cases. 47 JN.1 cases have been reported from Goa in total.  (As per Times Now)

Gujarat has reported 36 cases, and Kerala has reported 41 JN.1 cases. Thirty-four cases have been reported from Karnataka, nine from Maharashtra, and four each from Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan. Telangana reported two instances, and Delhi reported one case of the novel JN.1 subvariant.

Although JN.1 is highly contagious, experts caution that the overall risk is modest and that the virus generally causes mild symptoms that resemble a common cold, affecting the upper respiratory tract. Additionally, they have urged people not to panic and emphasised that the winter is typically when viral respiratory diseases see an increase.

As the New Year draws near, experts have recommended that the elderly and those with comorbidities stay away from crowded areas and wear face masks, but they have also stated that there is no immediate need to implement public health measures.
