Ankush Hazra Got Us To Try These 4 Iconic Street Foods In Kolkata

The newest episode of Teri Gully Mein was less of a shoot and more of an edible love letter to Kolkata, with Ankush Hazra as our very enthusiastic tour guide. The minute we landed on his turf, there was that unmistakable hum in the air; the yellow taxis, the trams, the chaos that somehow feels comforting. “It’s like stepping into another city altogether at the time of Durga Puja,” we joked, and Ankush just smiled as if to say, you haven’t even begun yet.

Ankush Hazra Leads A Flavour-Packed Kolkata Food Tour

Our food trail kicked off with the city’s pride and joy: Puchka. You can’t really say you’ve tasted Kolkata until that first spicy, tamarind-soaked explosion hits your tongue. Ankush dived straight in, explaining how he prefers his version loaded with chole, curd, and enough masala to start a fire. Watching him eat it was pure joy, like a local showing off his childhood crush.

Then came Jhal Muri, like a glorious chaos in a paper cone. It’s often compared to Mumbai’s Bhel Puri, but honestly, Jhal Muri has a sharper attitude, thanks to its drizzle of mustard oil and that fiery spice mix that hits you before you’re even ready. Each handful is loud and unapologetically Bengali, just like the streets it’s sold on.

Fish Fry, Puchka And More

When we finally moved to the meaty side of things, Ankush got visibly nostalgic and mentioned that he loves the chicken curry and mutton curry that his mom makes. You could tell that for him, food wasn’t just flavour, it was family. But nostalgia quickly gave way to curiosity as we tried the Fish Fry, another local favourite that came with a golden crust and a surprisingly sharp bite. “That’s Kashundi,” Ankush explained, pointing to the mustard sauce that leaves a tingling heat on your tongue. It stays with you in the best way possible.

And because no Kolkata food story is complete without it, we ended with the Kathi Roll. If you’ve ever had one, you know it’s not just a snack, it’s a full-blown meal rolled up in ghee-laced parantha. The egg roll and the chicken roll were each stuffed to the brim, dripping with flavour. “Jab mai mood me hota hoon, toh do bhi kha sakta hoon.” Ankush laughed, and honestly, we believed him.

By the time we wrapped, the city had done what it always does: it had fed us, floored us, and left us slightly obsessed. With Ankush Hazra leading the way, Kolkata didn’t just serve ambience, it was the main character, serving up spice, soul, and stories at every turn.
