Anushka Rathod Reveals Why She Cannot Live Outside Surat!

Surat is often introduced as the land of diamonds and buzzing textile mills. But on this particular day, it wore a different crown: the city of food. Curly Tales’ travel-food show Tere Gully Mein dropped anchor here, with editor-in-chief Kamiya Jani wandering through Surat’s lanes for the very first time, guided by finance creator Anushka Rathod.

THIS Is Why Anushka Rathod Can Never Leave Surat

Known for simplifying money matters online, Anushka ditched mutual funds and market tips for bajhia, locho, and a desi croissant, proudly showing off her hometown’s culinary identity.

“Welcome to Surat!” she declared with an energy that instantly set the tone. Kamiya, beaming, admitted this was her maiden trip and she couldn’t wait to see if the city really lived up to its reputation as a vegetarian’s paradise.

Within minutes, Anushka’s connection to Surat split out like a confession. She recalled trying, twice, to live away, once in Bengaluru and once in Mumbai. Both times, the experiment collapsed. “I just couldn’t,” she said, laughing at her own failed attempts. To explain the attachment, she quoted an old Gujarati line: “Surat nu janam ane Kashi nu maran.” Translation? Being born in Surat and dying in Kashi equals a life well-lived. And, she added, if you’ve eaten here, you understand exactly why people say it.

Surat Street Food Trail

The two then launched into a feast. First came locho, a spongy, steaming gram flour creation born out of a cooking accident but now a staple snack you’ll find at every corner shop. Next up was bajhia, which are fritters served hot and irresistible as a reminder of Gujarat’s genius for snacks.

And just when you think you know what to expect from Surat, it surprises you. Out comes the desi croissant, a playful Surati twist on the French pastry, butter layered with masala, the local palate written all over it.

Between bites, the chat flowed back to the character of Surat, its sense of community, its comfort, and its obsession with food. For Anushka, it was simple: you can live in Mumbai’s rush or Bengaluru’s tech hubs, but you’ll always crave Surat’s warmth.
