Exclusive: Falaknuma Palace In Hyderabad Has The World’s Largest 101 Seater Dining Table

There are palaces that you admire from the outside, and then there are palaces that make you instinctively lower your voice when you walk in. Falaknuma Palace in Hyderabad belongs to the latter. Perched above the city, the former residence of the Nizam feels almost theatrical in its grandeur, with Italian marble, ornate interiors and enough history tucked into its rooms to fill several books. We got to explore its insane royalty up close and personal in our latest episode of Palaces Of India. 

Falaknuma Palace’s 101 Seater Dining Hall Is Pure Nizami Grandeur

You really think the regality of the palace has peaked, but then you enter the 101 seater Dining Hall. And suddenly, shahi dawat doesn’t feel like an expression from another era.

The first thing that catches your eye is the table. Long isn’t quite the word for it. The legendary dining table stretches through the room, with 101 seats arranged along it, creating a sight that feels almost surreal when you’re standing at one end and looking towards the other. The table itself is reported to be about 108 feet long, while the palace describes it as the world’s longest permanent dining table. 

Above it, ornate crystal chandeliers hang from the richly decorated ceiling, catching the light as if the room has been waiting for another royal feast to begin. The polished wood interiors, gleaming tableware and golden-hued cutlery only add to the effect. There is nothing minimal about this room, and frankly, it doesn’t need to be.

It looks exactly like the kind of place where a dinner would turn into an occasion.

Inside The 108-Foot Dining Table With 101 Seats

There is also a rather lovely detail attached to the table. Despite being the Nizam’s palace, the Nizam apparently didn’t always choose the head of the table for himself. The idea was to sit among his guests and share the meal with them. So while the room itself is built to impress, the dining tradition had something unexpectedly democratic about it; the man at the centre of the palace could simply be another person at the table.

And that’s what makes the 101 Dining Hall so fascinating.

It isn’t just a giant table in an extravagant palace. You can almost picture the room as it once was; people arriving, conversations travelling across the table, servants moving in synchrony, crystal catching the light and an elaborate Nizami spread making its way from one end to the other.

Standing there today, the feast is gone, the table remains, and somehow, it still feels like dinner could begin any minute.
