There is apparently a magical age at which you are expected to suddenly become mature and ready for marriage. Sunanda Sharma thinks the whole premise is a little off. Speaking to Kamiya Jani on Sunday Brunch, Sunanda Sharma opened up about relationships, commitment and why marriage should not be treated like something you tick off on your life checklist simply because you have reached a particular age. For her, there is no universal number. You get married when you are actually ready for what comes with it.

Sunanda Sharma Says Marriage Is Not About Being Old Enough

Sunanda Sharma explained that readiness, for her, means being willing to step outside your own comfort zone for another person. She is talking about being ready to genuinely commit yourself to someone.

That is a very different thing from simply being in love.

You can adore someone and still not be ready to share your life with them. You can have a great relationship and still feel that marriage is not something you want right now. And you can be at an age when everyone around you thinks you should be settling down while internally thinking, Absolutely not.

According to Sunanda Sharma, that feeling matters.

Her Take On Marriage, Commitment And Divorce

This is where the conversation gets particularly familiar for anyone who has grown up in India.

Marriage can become a strange collective obsession. Someone else’s engagement somehow becomes a discussion about your future. A family function can turn into an unofficial matrimonial conference. And there is always that one relative who has apparently been keeping track of your age more closely than you have.

But Sunanda Sharma believes marriage should never be something you enter because you have run out of excuses.

If you are not ready, then you should not do it.

And there is no virtue in marrying against your own wishes just because the people around you think you are taking too long. Sunanda Sharma also spoke about seeing news of couples getting divorced only four or five months after their weddings.

She pointed out how difficult that can be because divorce itself can be a deeply traumatic experience. Her concern seems to be less about judging couples whose marriages end and more about the speed with which some people appear to be making such enormous decisions.

A marriage, however, is considerably harder to undo.

For Sunanda Sharma, taking time before making that choice matters. There is no guarantee that waiting will make a marriage last, but rushing into one because you think you are supposed to be married by a certain age does not make much sense either.
