This Sunday Brunch episode was extra special as our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, was welcomed into chef Vikas Khanna’s beautiful home in Amritsar, where she met his family over a hearty Punjabi feast. During the conversation, the Khanna family shared stories about the chef’s childhood, his love for food, and the first meal he craves whenever he returns to Amritsar from New York.

Vikas Khanna Eats This Dish As Soon As He Comes To Amritsar

When Kamiya asked chef Vikas Khanna’s mother about the first thing he eats after arriving in the city, her answer came instantly: kulcha chana. She revealed that even if he reached home later, this iconic Amritsari dish was always his first stop.

Apart from kulcha chana, the chef also makes it a point to visit Brijwasi Chat Bhandar for its famous chaat. After all, you can take an Amritsari out of Amritsar, but you can’t take Amritsar out of an Amritsari! At home, however, he enjoys the comforting simplicity of rajma chawal, a meal that every North Indian can relate to.

“Jab main fail hua, tab bhi rajma chawal khae; pass hua, tab bhi rajma chawal khae,” he happily confessed.

But for the Khanna family, it’s a place where the chef showcases his culinary artistry and they get to experience this every time they are in the city.

When Kamiya asked the chef’s mother, elder brother, and sister-in-law about their favourite dishes at the restaurant, they didn’t hesitate. His elder brother picked the chef’s signature Dahi Kebab, his sister-in-law chose the house chutney, his mother swore by the cold coffee, and his niece’s favourite was the tiramisu.
