For an exciting episode of Stories from Bharat, our Editor-in-Chief Kamiya Jani met with none other than the brilliant Karan Johar, one of India’s most popular filmmakers, known not only for the larger-than-life films he makes but also for his presence on several reality TV shows. In this episode, we got a deep dive into his movies, as well as his life and mindset as a businessperson. From having the right co-founder to dealing with failures, he shared it all with us. Read on to know more.
Karan Johar Speaks About Dealing With Failure
The moviemaking business comes with a lot of ups and downs. No matter how much effort or thought you put into every element of making a movie, there’s absolutely no telling if the audience is going to love it, or how much, for that matter. And the same stands true for Karan Johar. While a lot of his movies are blockbuster hits, there are still some that fail to impress the audience. So we wanted to know: how does he deal with failure?
Well, he calls failure a very close sibling to success and believes that every failure teaches something. He believes that it’s just something you have to deal with. Comparing it to success, he says that both of these scenarios go both ways. In a way, success can really heighten your expectations, while sometimes failure can also bring a sense of relief, where you just accept that, okay, this went wrong, and we’ll do better next time. Karan Johar says, “Success is sometimes a tough hat to wear. I have no problem dealing with failure.”
This Is How He Found His Co-Founder
In this episode, we also found out how he got into running this business. He revealed that back in 2004, when he had just lost his father, he didn’t have any family to count on to help him run the business. That’s when he reached out to his friend from school and college, Apoorva Mehta, who then left his job in London and became his co-founder for Dharma Productions, and the rest is history. For the past 20 years, they have worked on the businesses together. While Karan Johar is the creative force behind it all, he credits Apoorva Mehta for being the one with the business head and all the insights.
