During an episode of Sunday Brunch, our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, had a conversation with legendary actors Shatrughan Sinha and Paresh Rawal. The chat took place at Shatrughan Sinha’s home, Ramayana, in Mumbai. During the conversation, the actors shared their thoughts on being typecast in films. They shared that growth can be achieved in both ways—whether by playing the same role or by experimenting.
Shatrughan Sinha & Paresh Rawal On Doing Different Roles
Kamiya Jani said, “Ek cheez hai aap dono mein ki aap dono kabhi bhi apne aap ko stereotype nahi hone denge. Har baar alag alag kisi tarah ka keerdar lete hain, ek hi genre mein nahi fit hona chahte.” (“One thing about both of you is that you never let yourselves be stereotyped. You take on different kinds of roles each time and don’t want to be confined to a single genre.”) Building on this, she asked, “Kya ye conscious decision raha hai?” (“Is this the conscious decision?”)
To this, Shaturghan Sinha said, “Yeh apki longetitivity Ke liye hota hain, growth ke liye hota hain, aage badhne ke liye hota hain. Ek tarah ka karke bhi aap growth kar sakte hai. Ek great actor jo hain, log father of cinema bolte hai—Charlie Chaplin ek hi tarah ka karte gaye, usi mein itni variety thi. Sadiya guzar gayi lekin aj bhi log unhe bhul nahi paa rahe or nahi bhul panege.” (“It happens for your longevity and growth, to help you move forward. You can grow even by doing the same kind of role. A great actor, whom people call the father of cinema, Charlie Chaplin. He kept doing similar roles even though there was so much variety in his work. Many years have passed, but even today, people haven’t forgotten him and never will.”)
The Hera Pheri actor agreed with him on this. Both legendary actors believe that whether you keep changing genres or stick to one, you can still achieve success and make your mark in the industry.
How Legendary Actors Spend Their Sundays?
When asked about how they spend their Sundays, Paresh Rawal said that his friends would visit him and they would go to watch theatrical dramas. He also mentioned that even Shaturghan Sinha used to do theatre dramas. The Kaala Pathar actor even praised Paresh Rawal’s drama. He further revealed that Paresh Rawal had shown him the original title of ‘Oh My God’. Sinha went to watch it on the invitation of the Phir Hera Pheri actor.
