There was a surprisingly relatable moment when spiritual leader Pookie Baba spoke about jalebi. The latest Sunday Brunch episode with Kamiya Jani was all about seva, meeting elderly women who live in the ashram, and indulging in sattvik bhojan. Alongside the service activity, there was also a strong presence of the sattvik culture and community spirit, making it more like a shared experience.

Pookie Baba Reveals Childhood Love For Jalebi

Somewhere in the middle of that setting, the talk turned playful and personal. Pookie Baba was asked a simple question by Kamiya Jani, our Editor-in-Chief: What was your favourite food as a child? He didn’t offer an abstract answer or dodge it with wisdom. He simply named jalebi!

Then came the part that stayed with people. He said that when he was young, liking jalebi and getting jalebi were two very different things, as money was limited. The sweet remained in the imagination more often than on a plate. Many people know that feeling well, wanting something ordinary so badly because it was never ordinary to you.

Then he laughed at the irony of life. Today, he can buy jalebi whenever he wishes. There is no barrier now. Yet the desire itself has faded. The thing that once glowed in the distance no longer calls out the same way. Time had changed the appetite more than wealth ever could.

Pookie Baba On Jalebi, Desire And Detachment

Instead of turning the story sentimental, he drew a sharper lesson from it. He said, “Jab bhookh hoti hai, tab vastu nahi hoti, aur jab vastu hoti hai, tab iccha nahi hoti.”

That is why the moment landed so well; it started with dessert and ended with detachment. It sounded less like a sermon and more like a memory speaking honestly. A child staring at jalebi through circumstance, and an adult standing next to abundance without urgency.

Sometimes wisdom doesn’t arrive wrapped in scripture. Sometimes it comes in a spiral shape, soaked in sugar syrup, and remembered years later.
