In the recent Sunday Brunch episode, our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, stepped into the beautiful Vashi home of hit Indian singer and composer Shankar Mahadevan. From celebrating Ganpati Bappa and enjoying a traditional Sadhya meal at Shankar Mahadevan’s home to catching him singing live, here’s what all went down in this festive episode!
Ganesh Utsav At Shankar Mahadevan’s Sasha Villa
Ganesh Utsav celebrations are in full swing across the country, which is why our recent Sunday Brunch episode saw our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, step into Shankar Mahadevan’s home, Sasha Villa in Vashi. This episode was quite special, as it not only included candid conversations but also Ganpati celebrations with his family. The episode started with the singer and his wife, Sangeetha, talking about their beautiful idol and the significance of Ganesh Chaturthi for their family. They revealed that their celebrations include daily aartis and games of housie (tambola or bingo) with family and friends.
They also introduced us to Kiwi, their furry family member, who was dressed in festive attire to be part of the celebrations. Later, the couple shared their love story with us. Sangeeta Mahadevan, his wife, was in the 7th standard, and the singer was in the 10th when their journey began. And since then, they have been inseparable.
A Traditional Sadhya Sunday Brunch
Next, we sat down for an authentic South Indian Sadhya served on banana leaves. The meal included Payasam, Bhindi Raita, Pineapple Pachadi, Aloo Sabzi Puri, and the star of the meal, Ukadiche Modaks, among many other lip-smacking vegetarian delicacies. Afterwards, Shankar Mahadevan and his sons, Siddharth and Shivam, sang a specially composed song dedicated to Ganpati Bappa, which lifted the festive spirits even higher.
The conversation naturally moved to his musical journey. He revealed that his journey began with classical music when he was just about three and a half years old. Music being an important part of his South Indian culture, he also started playing instruments at a very young age. He said, “Main saadhe teen saal ka tha tabse harmonium baja raha hoon.” (I have been playing the harmonium since I was three and a half years old.)
He then reminisced about meeting Ehsaan and Loy, after which the trio started composing music for films and never looked back. Shankar Mahadevan also sang his iconic Breathless live for us, making the episode even more memorable. The episode ended on a cheerful note as we played a fun game of “Who is Most Likely To” with the Mahadevan family. To know who was most likely to do what, you will have to catch the full episode!
