On a bright Sunday afternoon, Geeta Basra leaned back on the couch during Sunday Brunch with Kamiya Jani, our editor-in-chief and laughed as she told the story of how she first crossed paths with Harbhajan Singh. The stories were exchanged over a splash of Punjabi and Gujarati dishes with Aloo Paratha, Bhakri and Dhokla leading the table.

Geeta Basra Reveals How She Met Harbhajan Singh For The First Time

It all began, of all things, with a poster. Nothing dramatic, just her face on a print that caught Harbhajan’s eye. But for him, that fleeting glance wasn’t just admiration. He decided he had to meet the woman in the picture. All thanks to their common friend, Yuvraj Singh, who played the unlikely matchmaker between the cricket pitch and the film world, the couple met for the first time. And when Harbhajan finally stood before her, he didn’t waste time in pleasantries. “You’re the girl I’m going to marry,” he declared.

Geeta, barely 22 or 23 then and still adjusting to life in a new country, didn’t know whether to laugh or run. She wasn’t exactly on the lookout for romance, but something about his boyish confidence and the way he said it without a trace of doubt broke through her caution.

Why Their Relationship Was Built On Ordinary Moments

From there, their story didn’t unfold in some dramatic Bollywood way, but in quiet, ordinary moments that became unforgettable. Once Geeta Basra needed cricket tickets for herself and a few friends, and Harbhajan happily stepped in. That simple favour became an excuse for coffee, which became lunch, and before long, dinner.

What worked between them was never a script, it was the messier, unpredictable rhythm of two people stumbling into each other’s orbit. He was direct, almost disarming, in the way he declared what he wanted. She met that with a mix of suspicion and laughter.
