Following the success of its first rubberised jogging track at Nehru Park, NDMC is now set to develop a similar facility at Sanjay Park. Yes, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is preparing to roll out its second rubberised synthetic jogging track. This time, circling the lake at Sanjay Park near Laxmi Bai Nagar. Estimated at ₹1.6 crore, the project is slated for completion in three months, with tenders already floated and the execution timeline officially underway.
Delhi’s Sanjay Lake To Get A Rubberised Jogging Track
According to Hindustan Times, the new track, stretching roughly 1.75 kilometres and 1.5 metres wide, will be laid over the existing red sandstone path, which has deteriorated steadily under years of wear. A senior NMDC official said that the sandstone quality has been depleted. He added that they plan to remove the damaged portions and rework the base, and install a synthetic rubberised surface on top. The adjoining mud path will remain open for use during construction, serving as a temporary lane for regular walkers.
This isn’t a standalone upgrade; it’s part of a broader civic push to elevate morning fitness infrastructure in key parks across Lutyens’ Delhi. NDMC’s first synthetic track, laid at Nehru Park in 2020, was introduced as a pilot. It drew positive attention not just for comfort but for encouraging greater footfall among runners and senior citizens alike. Since then, the civic body has been leaning into durable, low-maintenance alternatives to traditional stone and gravel paths.

Towards A Fitter Infrastructure
Maintenance is, in fact, hardwired into the Sanjay Park project. The agency executing the work will be bound by a five-year upkeep contract that includes weekly cleaning with blower machines, monthly washes with high-pressure water, and timely repairs.
The official from NMDC highlighted that synthetic tracks get damaged easily if they are not maintained properly. He added that their Nehru Park experiment has taught them that spike shoes are the biggest culprit of damaged tracks. Guards will be posted at key entry points, and signage warning users to avoid spiked footwear will be prominently displayed.
Sanjay Park itself, sprawled across 16 acres, is one of NDMC’s more ecologically rich public spaces. It sits along Brigadier Hoshiyar Singh Road and boasts an artificial lake, over 1,400 trees, and 33 different species, including Moulsari, Kadam, Grevillea Robusta, Chorisia, and Acacia. The park was inaugurated on June 23, 1982, by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and remains a popular walking spot for residents from Laxmi Bai Nagar and surrounding colonies.
The development at Sanjay Park comes weeks after NDMC announced another running facility: a 200-metre gravel track inside Lodhi Garden, near Gate No. 5. Inspired by the layout at Siri Fort Sports Complex, the Lodhi Garden track will come with a built-in sprinkler system to manage dust and preserve surface texture, as stated by The Hindustan Times.
