Did You Know That Carrying THIS Food Item On Indian Trains Can Land You In Jail?

Train journeys are easy, relaxing and offer a lot more flexibility as compared to flights. We can carry so many things, food and more, without worrying about extra baggage costs. But did you know that carrying dried coconut on a train is a strict no-no? Carrying this fruit can not just attract penalties but can also land you in jail. Here’s why.

Dried Coconut Is Banned On Indian Trains

We have all eaten dried coconuts at some point in our lives. They are mildly sweet and have a rich taste. Honestly, many of us love snacking on it. It’s healthy. But carrying them on trains is not something we would suggest. Indian Railways offers comfort in so many aspects, be it its extensive reach or comfortable travel options. But carrying dried coconuts on journeys is something they do not tolerate.

According to a report by India TV, this commonly consumed fruit, also known as ‘copra’, is banned under Indian Railways’ safety regulations. The reason? The fruit’s outer shell contains coarse, straw-like fibres. These fibres are highly flammable, which means they could easily catch fire. In short, this common fruit is a potential fire hazard in crowded railway compartments.

The Railways categorises dried coconut as a fire hazard under Sections 164 and 165 of the Railways Act. While the rule is strict, there is one exception. Passengers travelling for religious purposes are allowed to carry one or two coconuts with other puja items. Fresh coconuts without the outer husk are, however, allowed on trains.
