We come bearing some news, folks! Tasmac bars in Tamil Nadu could soon look very different from the dingy drinking spaces they have traditionally been associated with. The state-run Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) is planning a major makeover of its bars, with the aim of creating cleaner and more comfortable spaces where customers can sit, sip and snack. Scroll on to know more about this!
Tasmac Bars To Get A New Avatar In Tamil Nadu
According to The Times of India, under the proposed changes, Tasmac bars will no longer be limited to serving liquor. They will also be allowed to offer tea, coffee and juices, opening up the premises to non-drinkers as well. The new regulations will also allow kitchens inside the bars, meaning customers could get freshly prepared snacks instead of relying on food brought in from outside.
One of the biggest changes is the permission to operate dedicated kitchen areas inside the bars. The draft regulations state that kitchens must be separated from seating areas and comply with food safety and hygiene standards under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
TOI reported that the move comes after years of kitchens operating unofficially at several Tasmac bars, despite existing rules not allowing them. According to the report, the government now wants to formally permit them while ensuring that food safety and hygiene standards are followed.
The state is also looking to improve the overall appearance and infrastructure of these establishments. Under the proposed rules, bars will have to operate from proper concrete structures. Temporary sheds or structures made from tin sheets, asbestos sheets, wood, bamboo, tarpaulin or thatch will not be permitted.

New Rules For Where Bars Can Operate
The proposed makeover aims to change the perception of Tasmac bars from poorly maintained, drink-only spaces to tidier and more comfortable establishments. The Tamil Nadu government says the new rules will also bring kitchens and food preparation under proper food safety and hygiene regulations.
One significant change concerns the location of Tasmac bars. The Tamil Nadu government has amended the relevant liquor retail rules to allow bars to operate within 100 metres of Tasmac outlets. Under the revised regulations, those with a no-objection certificate for eligible premises will be able to participate in the bar tender process.
