Did You Know The Tiny Holes On Lids Of Coffee Takeaway Cups Are Not Just For Design?

If you are someone who orders coffee from cafes as takeaways, you might have noticed that those cups come with a very small hole on the lid. It is present just alongside a bigger opening meant for taking sips. Many people have wondered what this tiny hole is actually for. But today, we are putting that question to rest by explaining its real purpose.

Coffee lovers, when you order coffee for a grab, cafes usually serve it in a takeaway cup instead of a mug, right? Honestly, takeaway coffee cups look quite aesthetic. They are small and very convenient to enjoy your favourite latte on the go. You might have noticed a small hole at the corner of the lid, right next to the larger opening meant for drinking. It probably left you curious. You will be surprised to know that this smaller hole is actually quite important.

Hot coffee produces steam. When coffee sits in an open cup, the steam escapes naturally. But in a takeaway cup with a lid, the steam needs an outlet. This is where the small hole becomes important. It allows steam to escape from the cup. This helps maintain the coffee’s temperature while also preventing excess pressure from building inside.

The Small Hole Prevents Coffee From Spilling

Apart from this, the hole has another function. According to Reader’s Digest, when you drink from the main opening, your mouth forms a seal. This blocks air from entering the cup. If air cannot enter, the coffee will not flow smoothly and may spill suddenly. The small hole lets air enter the cup to replace the liquid that leaves when you sip. This balances the internal pressure and ensures a smooth flow. Without it, your hot drink may come out in spurts, making the experience uncomfortable.

The design on the lid of a coffee takeaway cup is surely smart! The small hole lets the steam escape, maintains the temperature, prevents the coffee from spilling, and promises a smoother coffee-drinking experience on the go!
