India’s Camikara Rum Beats Global Rivals, Wins Top Awards In UK And US Competitions

For years, the global conversation around premium rum rarely included India. The category has long been dominated by Caribbean and Latin American producers, while Indian rum was mostly viewed through the lens of large-scale industrial production. However, a recent wave of international recognition for Camikara, India’s first pure cane juice aged rum, is beginning to change how the world looks at Indian spirits.

Camikara’s Global Rum Awards Are Turning Heads

The moment feels similar to what happened with Indian single malt whisky over the past decade. Indian distilleries gradually built credibility on the global stage, winning awards and challenging established whisky regions. Now rum appears to be entering a comparable phase, and Camikara is emerging as one of the most visible faces of that change.

On 12 March 2026 in New Delhi, Camikara announced a series of international wins that placed the brand among some of the most respected rums in the world.

At the Global Rum & Cachaça Masters Awards 2026 in the United Kingdom, Camikara’s 8-Year-Old expression received the prestigious “Master Medal,” the highest distinction awarded at the competition. In the same contest, Camikara 3-Year-Old secured its second consecutive Gold Medal. That result made Camikara the only Indian rum to win both Master and Gold in the same year at the competition.

Recognition quickly followed from the United States as well. During the Aged Rum category tasting conducted by The Fifty Best, Camikara 8-Year-Old received a Double Gold Medal.

Camikara’s 3-Year-Old expression also picked up a Gold Medal in the International Blend category, demonstrating that both expressions of the rum were able to impress judges across different tasting formats and categories.

Taken together, these results place Camikara among a relatively small group of rums that have impressed judging panels on both sides of the Atlantic; this is something even established rum brands do not always achieve.

India has one of the longest recorded relationships with sugarcane in the world. Ancient Indian texts contain references to fermented cane-based beverages, suggesting that forms of sugarcane alcohol existed centuries before modern distillation practices developed. Yet despite this history, and despite being one of the world’s largest producers of sugarcane, India rarely appeared in conversations about premium rum.

Shalini Sharma, Head of Marketing at Piccadilly Agro Industries Limited, believes that recognition for Camikara reflects a broader shift in how Indian spirits are perceived internationally. “For a country with such a long and complex relationship with sugarcane, this moment carries deep historical resonance,” Shalini Sharma said. “References to fermented cane beverages appear in ancient Indian texts, yet for decades modern Indian rum was largely associated with industrial-scale production rather than artisanal craft.”

She adds that the recent recognition suggests that perception is beginning to evolve.

How Is Camikara Rum Different?

Many rums around the world rely on molasses, a byproduct of sugar production, as their base ingredient. Others incorporate additives after distillation to influence flavour or colour. Camikara takes a different approach; the rum is produced from fresh sugarcane juice harvested within 36 hours, allowing the spirit to retain the natural character and flavour of the cane itself.

The ageing process also plays an important role in shaping the rum’s profile. Camikara matures in American oak barrels in North India’s subtropical climate, where large temperature swings accelerate the ageing process. Those climatic variations intensify the interaction between the wood and the spirit, contributing to deeper flavour development over time.

With global competitions now recognising that distinct identity, Camikara’s recent wins may represent more than just awards for a single brand. They hint at a larger moment for Indian rum, one where the country begins to move from the margins of the premium rum conversation toward the centre of it.
