K. Rustom & Co. Ice Cream Parlour In Mumbai In Trouble
K. Rustom & Co. ice cream parlour near Churchgate Railway Station holds an iconic status in Mumbai’s food culture and is extremely famous. The parlour is known for its legendary ice cream sandwiches and nostalgic appeal. But the place has now found itself in trouble. According to India Today, the Maharashtra FDA has suspended its licence after discovering severe hygiene violations at the ice cream parlour.
The officials found the presence of live rats, houseflies and expired flavouring agents, including pistachio, pineapple, sweet orange, cherry, almond, American Ice Cream Soda, mixed fruit, strawberry, blackcurrant, Rum Jamaica and others. The entire expired stock was destroyed on the spot to prevent its use. Along with that, the officials also found lapses in maintaining the mandatory cold chain required for the safe storage and handling of ice cream.

Food Samples Sent For Testing
According to India Today, food samples collected during the inspection have been sent for laboratory analysis. Moreover, an earlier report also suggested that ice cream from K. Rustom & Co. contained only 7.94% milk fat, which is below the minimum 10% prescribed under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) norms.
The ice cream parlour will remain closed until the food sample reports are received. A final decision will be taken by the authorities based on the results. This action was taken under the Food Safety and Standards Act as part of the FDA’s ‘Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra’ campaign.
