Sunanda Sharma has apparently cracked the code for the kind of meal you make when you are hungry but your enthusiasm for cooking has already left the building. During her conversation with Kamiya Jani on Sunday Brunch, Sunanda Sharma spoke about aloo ki katliyaan, a dish she counts among her ultimate comfort foods. And if you are already thinking, Oh, so basically jeera aloo?, please stop right there. Sunanda herself had to make that distinction.

Sunanda Sharma Reveals Her Ultimate Comfort Food

She first mentioned jeera aloo, then quickly corrected herself. According to her, aloo ki katliyaan is not quite the same thing. Her explanation was wonderfully specific; jeera aloo and aloo ki katliyaan are like relatives, but this one is “uske mamu ka ladka.”

Honestly, potato genealogy has never been this entertaining.

The dish itself is gloriously uncomplicated. You take potatoes and slice them into very, very thin shreds. Then they go into ghee with masalas and are cooked until they turn into this intensely comforting, spiced potato situation.

And apparently, you do not even need to wait for it to become part of some grand meal. Sunanda Sharma revealed that you can eat the dish on its own too. Or have it with chapati. Basically, it is happy being whatever you need it to be at that particular moment.

Which is probably why it has such strong comfort-food credentials.

Why Aloo Ki Katliyaan Is The Ultimate Lazy-Girl Meal

There is something very specific about a plate of thinly sliced potatoes cooked in ghee and masala. It does not require a complicated gravy or an ingredient list that looks like a grocery store evacuation plan. It is just aloo doing aloo things, except sliced really thin and given enough masala to make it worth coming back for another bite.

And the fact that Sunanda Sharma describes it as the lazy-girl kind of food makes it even better. Because sometimes cooking means carefully planning dinner, chopping twelve things and pretending you have your life together.

And sometimes it means looking at two potatoes, reaching for the ghee and thinking, haan, aaj katliyaan bana lete hain.

Sunanda Sharma, frankly, may have just given the potato family another branch to obsess over.
