If you’ve ever laughed at one of RJ Naved’s legendary prank calls, you’ve probably assumed he spent years studying radio or journalism before becoming one of India’s most recognisable voices. Turns out, that’s not the case at all. The radio icon recently welcomed Curly Tales into his home for the latest episode of Tere Gully Mein, where the afternoon unfolded over desi murge ke kebab and a stroll through his beautiful garden packed with mangoes, lychees, lemons and plenty of greenery. But between the food and the laughter came a revelation that caught everyone by surprise.
RJ Naved Reveals He Never Studied Journalism
RJ Naved shared that he has never studied mass communication or journalism. Instead, he pursued a BBS course. For someone who has spent decades behind the microphone and shaped the sound of Indian radio, it was the last answer anyone expected.
So where did the craft come from? His answer was simple; it was people.
Naved believes everything he knows has come from watching, listening and understanding those around him. Whether it’s picking up quirks, noticing how people react, or simply paying attention to everyday conversations, that’s been his classroom all along. Radio, comedy and pulling off pranks were never skills he consciously sat down to learn. They just came naturally, and the more he observed people, the sharper those instincts became.

Why RJ Naved Says People Were His Biggest Teachers
Long before radio stations and prank calls made him famous, he was already the unofficial prankster in school and college. One story from those days had everyone in stitches. Naved recalled how he and his friends decided to target one of their closest friends on his wedding night. Instead of letting the groom enjoy his suhaagraat in peace, they secretly placed around 60 to 70 alarm clocks across the room, setting each one to ring every 15 minutes.
Every time the groom settled down, another alarm would go off. The entire night was spent hunting for hidden clocks and switching them off one after another. Naved laughed while narrating the memory, adding that even today, that friend hasn’t completely forgiven them for the prank.
The conversation also offered a glimpse into how he looks at his own career. While many credit him for creating some of India’s most memorable radio moments, Naved insists the real credit belongs to the people. Every prank, every joke and every memorable piece of content, he said, has come from people. Their habits, their reactions, their stories and their personalities have always been his biggest source of inspiration. In fact, he says he owes everything he has created to them.
