After many delays, the inauguration of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is all set to be done today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the airport on Wednesday, October 8. NMIA is set to be India’s first fully digital airport. Here’s more on this! 

PM Modi To Inaugurate NMIA In Mumbai Today


The much-anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport was originally scheduled to be inaugurated on September 30. But due to heavy rains across Mumbai and the Konkan area, the event was postponed by the authorities. Finally, today, on Wednesday, October 8, PM Modi will inaugurate the airport in Mumbai. CM Devendra Fadnavis also took to X to share glimpses of the new airport. 

As per a report by Hindustan Times, Mumbai has now joined the list of a handful of cities across the world with multiple airports, including London, New York, and Tokyo. NMIA will be the second international airport serving the Mumbai Metropolitan Region after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

India’s First Fully Digital Airport

As per the same report, the airport has been built under a public-private partnership between Adani Airport Holdings and the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd. (CIDCO).

Here are some key details about this new airport.

  • NMIA will be India’s first fully digital airport. It will have facilities for pre-booking vehicle parking spots and online baggage drop, something not offered by many other airports. It will also be fully automated and AI-enabled terminals. 
  •  The airport will also feature a mix of luxury brands and stores, letting travellers indulge in some retail therapy before their flights. 
  • The airport will also have expansive lounges, business pods, and free Wi-Fi.
  • NMIA is also designed to be green at its core, featuring solar energy systems, rainwater harvesting, noise reduction measures, and LEED-certified terminals.
  • In its initial phase, NMIA will handle 20 million passengers annually through one runway and one terminal. At full capacity, it will handle 155 million passengers yearly through four terminals and two runways.
  • Several airlines, including IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa Air, have already announced plans to start operations from NMIA. Moreover, commercial operations are set to begin in December.

  • The airport has been built at a whopping cost of ₹19,650 crore. NMIA will also help to generate more than two lakh jobs across the IT, hospitality, aviation, and real estate sectors.
