Bengal Announces Free Bus Travel Scheme For Women

Several Indian states and Union Territories offer free bus rides for women. These initiatives not only boost mobility but also help reduce travel costs for working women. According to The Times of India, Bengal has now also announced a similar scheme. State Women and Child Development and Social Welfare Minister Agnimitra Paul recently stated that women would be able to travel free on government buses from June 1.

The move aims to support lakhs of women, especially students and working professionals who rely heavily on public transport. Not just that, but the department is also exploring the possibility of issuing a ‘pink ticket’ to women.

Scheme Expected To Benefit Lakhs Of Women

According to Republic World, the free travel scheme for women will make travel affordable, along with improving access to workplaces, educational institutions and essential services. The state government has also ensured that the introduction of this new scheme will not lead to the withdrawal of existing social welfare programmes in Bengal. There is no doubt that this scheme will significantly benefit many women.

By eliminating travel costs, women will be able to save a lot of their income and use it for their health, nutrition, education or family needs. Plus, women can also apply for jobs far from their homes that they thought were not possible before because of the commute. Moreover, this initiative also fosters independence. Similar initiatives in other Indian cities have shown positive results, and the same is expected in Bengal.
