Bengaluru Restaurateur Says Bengal, Northeast Workers More Open To Late Shifts As Compared To Locals

In an interview with YouTuber Ayush Wadhwa, restaurateur Abhijit Gupta said he finds it difficult to hire Bengaluru locals willing to work till 1 AM in the food and beverage industry. He added that workers from West Bengal and the Northeast are generally more open to late-night shifts, and also offered an explanation for his observation.

Bengaluru Restaurateur Feels Non-Locals More Open To Working Late

Abhijit Gupta, co-founder of popular chains like The Pizza Bakery, Paris Panini and Smash Guys, has spent years in the F&B industry, long enough to form some strong observations. His recent remarks on Bengaluru’s labour market have since sparked a conversation on social media.

In a now-viral snippet from his Instagram interview, he said it can be challenging to find locals in the city willing to work late hours. While acknowledging that he employs many hardworking Kannadigas, he noted that workers from West Bengal and Northeast India are often more willing to stay beyond standard working hours.

“The local labour workforce in Karnataka doesn’t like doing these restaurant hours, because these are late nights. But the guys coming from the northeast, they know that “I am here for one year, acha paisa kamake wapas jaana hai gaon.” Obviously, it’s not binary; we have a lot of Kannadigas, local guys who work insane hours. Super hard-working guys. But it’s far harder to find a local guy who is willing to close up and leave the restaurant at 1 AM, as it is to find someone from West Bengal,” he shared his thoughts.

Explains Why He Feels So…

Abhijit Gupta’s observation is not random; it taps into the cultural shift in Bengaluru’s food scene from relaxed morning cafes, aka darshinis, to 15-hour-a-day burger joints. “Darshini culture is very different; they open in the morning for three hours. They open in the evenings for three to four hours; it’s a very relaxed day.”
