Looking at cherry blossoms in Japan is on the bucket list of every traveller! But what if we tell you that you can see cherry blossoms without having to leave India? Yes, many trees in Chennai have turned pink, mirroring that Japanese aesthetic. But yes, those are not Japanese sakura, but Tabebuia rosea, also known as Pink Trumpets. Beautiful pictures and videos showing the bloom are going viral on the internet.

The trees that are causing the pink bloom are Pink Trumpets, pink-coloured flowers that bloom in spring and completely transform the appearance of the city. They are sometimes called ‘cherry blossom lookalikes’ too. This is the reason why the current bloom in Chennai is being compared to Japan’s cherry blossom season. And honestly, it does look breathtaking. Many social media users took to their accounts to share glimpses of the bloom from the city.

Venkatesh Ram posted a video of cherry blossom-like blooms at the Madhuravoyal flyover in Chennai and wrote, “A rare moment where the city slows down…
and blooms in pink. Namma Chennai, like you’ve never seen before.” 


Another X user, Saravanan Annadurai, also posted a video and wrote, “Cherry Blossoms in Chennai like in Japan and in Washington DC.”

Chennai’s Urban Greening Policy Behind The Transformation

According to a report by India Herald, you can see these pretty pink cherry blossom-like blooms at Adyar flyover, Besant Nagar, Pallavaram Hill Road and more. Reportedly, this is all because of Chennai’s Urban Greening Policy. Authorities lined up these Tabebuia rosea saplings across key roads and neighbourhoods in Chennai, and now, years later, the glow-up is clearly visible.


Another X user, @AjuHermit,  also posted a beautiful video of these blooms and wrote, “Chennai is now witnessing a Pink bloom of Tabebuia Rosea. It’s pink bloom all over in the roads of Adyar flyover, Besant Nagar, Wipro and Microsoft stretch in OMR, Pallavaram hill road, Nolambur roads and many streets. These trees are planted under the Urban Greening policy.”


Dolly, an X user, wrote, “Chennai turned all pookie this summer,” with a video showing cherry blossom-like pink blooms in the city.
