Constructed in 1699, it was originally designed as a hunting lodge, where Maharaja Madho Singh I is believed to have retreated with his entourage during duck-hunting expeditions, according to historians.
In the early 18th century, Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber renovated and expanded both the palace and the surrounding Man Sagar Lake. Today, Jal Mahal is admired for its stunning blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture, featuring intricately carved jharokhas, elegant chhatris, graceful arches, and striking symmetrical design.

This Jaipur Palace Has Four Hidden Floors Beneath The Water
One of Jal Mahal‘s most fascinating features is that it has five storeys, but when Man Sagar Lake is at its usual level, only the top floor is visible. The remaining four floors stay underwater and are only occasionally revealed when the lake’s water level drops significantly.
The palace was also designed to stay naturally cool. Its submerged lower floors and thick stone walls help regulate the indoor temperature, offering a welcome respite from Rajasthan’s scorching summers, making it ideal for the Maharajas after returning from hunting expeditions.
Another highlight is the beautifully restored rooftop garden, laid out in the traditional Charbagh style inspired by Mughal landscaping. Complete with pathways and lush greenery, it adds to the palace’s architectural charm and historic grandeur.
