We come bearing some amazing news for wildlife lovers! West Bengal is now developing a new 1,000-acre tiger safari hub in Jhargram and has also approved a 4,500-hectare Conservation Reserve in Purulia. Here’s what we know so far about these projects.
West Bengal To Get A New Tiger Safari Hub In Jhargram
West Bengal is already quite famous for its tiger safaris, especially the world-renowned Sundarbans National Park and Bengal Safari Park in Siliguri. But now, the state may get another tiger safari hub! According to Millennium Post, five Royal Bengal tigers, along with leopards and other animals, will be relocated from Siliguri’s Bengal Safari Park to Jhargram. The project will be an open zoo spread across 1,000 acres but will also have safari facilities.
The project will allow wildlife lovers to observe majestic tigers and other wild animals in large enclosures. Not just that, but the Forest Department also plans to relocate hog deer and spotted deer from Bengal Safari Park to Jhargram to enrich the park’s diversity. This project means that tourists in West Bengal will now have another spot to see tigers and other animals.
Purulia To Get A New Conservation Reserve
That’s not all. The West Bengal government has also approved the creation of a new Forest Conservation Reserve in the Kotshila-Jhalda range of Purulia. It will become the district’s second protected reserve after Garh Panchakot. According to The Statesman, this project aims to strengthen wildlife conservation while also promoting eco-tourism in the area. The reserve will cover around 4,500 hectares across the Kotshila-Simani and Jhalda forest areas, which form an important wildlife corridor connecting forests in West Bengal and Jharkhand.
The Kotshila-Jhalda forests are home to many animals, including elephants migrating from the Dalma forest range in Jharkhand, along with leopards, sloth bears, grey wolves, Indian striped hyenas and wild boar. Other animals found here include pangolins, chital, nilgai, golden jackals and rock pythons. Reportedly, camera traps have also recorded rare species such as honey badgers and rusty-spotted cats.
