Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, or the Guwahati International Airport, recently took to its official X handle to announce this achievement. They wrote, “We are proud to announce that the brand new #GuwahatiAirport T2 has been honoured with the International Architectural Award 2025 in the Transport category.” This truly marks a proud moment not only for Assam but for the entire Northeast.
As per a report by NDTV, the award was presented by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design in collaboration with the European Centre for Architecture Art, Design and Urban Studies, and Metropolitan Arts Press, Ltd.
The architecture of this stunning T2 at the airport is a tribute to the wonders of Northeast India. The entire infrastructure is inspired by the “resilience of bamboo and the grace of foxtail orchids”. They further wrote, “Reflecting the natural beauty, biodiversity, and cultural depth of Assam, this iconic terminal blends sustainability with soul, welcoming the world to the heart of the region.”
Though made from bamboo, the airport does have a futuristic design. The entire structure is supported by numerous columns, which resemble tea-trunks, giving it a natural touch. Its rooftop, which has a curved and complex overlapping design, also gives the airport an earthy feel. The overall aesthetic makes it look like a beautiful biodiversity park instead of an airport. Not only that, but the open-air structure also gives it a grand feel.

Stunning Interiors With A Touch Of Nature
This picture showcases the interior of the Lokpriya Gopinath Airport Terminal 2. Its interior design incorporates lush greenery with a wooden-like walkway in between. The large open space with natural light streaming in is designed to put travellers at ease. The airport is particularly beautiful. In fact, we wouldn’t be exaggerating if we were to deem it India’s own take on Singapore’s Changi Airport, known for its exceptional design.
The design of Guwahati International Airport is not just rooted in its beauty. It also lays emphasis on sustainability. The open-plan layouts and skylights ensure energy efficiency and a low carbon footprint. The indoor gardens and green walls also promise better air quality, apart from offering a calm ambience to passengers.
Notably, the design of this beautiful airport was led by architectural firm NUDES, with Nuru Karim as lead architect and Mahesh Khanapurkar, Vishesh Khetawat, Vatsal Kapadia, Atul Hanchate, Nirmal Kumar, and Tanvi Savla as part of the design team.
