According to the Times of India, Russia is looking at new overland trade routes to strengthen connectivity with India. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin said possible routes could pass through Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, adding that “any options providing access to India are acceptable.”
If developed, the proposed corridor could create a direct overland rail freight link between Russia and India, while providing an alternative to traditional sea routes. The proposal comes as disruptions to key global shipping lanes continue to raise concerns over the reliability of maritime trade routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.
As per the Economic Times, the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Any prolonged disruption could affect energy supplies, shipping costs and international trade.
