Chennai Port-Maduravoyal Expressway To Open By 2027

The ₹3,570-₹5,570 crore expressway is said to be the country’s longest six-lane double-decker elevated road. As per the reports by Maritime Getaway, the highway is set to span 20-21 km from Chennai Port Gate No. 10 near the War Memorial to the Maduravoyal Interchange. The route travels along the bank of the Cooum River until Koyambedu and then along the median of NH 48 to Maduravoyal.

As part of a major plan to improve urban transportation, the lower deck of the corridor will be toll-free for regular city traffic, while only commercial vehicles using the upper deck will be charged. The upper level is being developed as a designated six-lane highway exclusively for container-sized trucks travelling to and from Chennai Port’s Gate 10. Out of the long 21-km corridor, the route from Maduravoyal to Koyambedu, which is around 7 km, will have a single deck, while the remaining 14 km up to the port will have a double-decker structure.

Construction, Strategic Impact & More

As per the reports, to speed up construction, work is currently proceeding for 11 hours daily, with five hours during the daytime and six hours at night, with support from the traffic police. NHAI has requested the Tamil Nadu government and the city police commissioner to increase work hours to up to 16 hours per day.

The high-level freight corridor is expected to reduce conflicts between freight and city traffic, enhancing turnaround times at Chennai Port while giving city residents faster, traffic-free travel. Once completed, the expressway will ensure seamless 24/7 highway connectivity and substantially enhance Chennai Port’s cargo handling capacity from the current 53 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to an anticipated 200 MTPA by 2047.

The project was originally targeted for completion by May 2026, but faced delays due to monsoon rains and other key factors.
