Uttarakhand Plans New Rules For Trekking, Mountaineering
According to Hindustan Times, Uttarakhand is working on its first comprehensive framework to regulate trekking and mountaineering activities across the state. The proposed guidelines, currently under review, could be introduced either as an official policy or a formal set of rules.
While talking to the publication, PK Patro, Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) (eco-tourism), said that they have prepared a draft framework and are now consulting with the government and key stakeholders, including the State Disaster Response Force, to finalise the details. The primary objective is to improve safety measures, reduce accidents and ensure quicker rescue operations in case of emergencies.

What Are The Proposed New Rules?
Coming to the proposed rules to regulate trekking and mountaineering around Uttarakhand. HT reported that the authorities are planning to make registration mandatory for every trekking agency and operator across the state. They will also set 14 as the minimum age to undertake any high-altitude expeditions across Uttarakhand.
As part of the proposed safety measures, Uttarakhand is considering making basic mountaineering training mandatory for guides under its upcoming regulatory framework for trekking and adventure activities. Officials said the move is aimed at improving public safety while also ensuring greater employment opportunities for local residents as certified guides.
The proposed framework also mandates trekkers to submit medical fitness certificates, while tour operators would be required to check weather conditions before every expedition. In addition, agencies and operators may have to provide insurance coverage for their employees as part of the new safety framework.
