During a metro journey, many people listen to songs, watch videos, or stream movies on their phones. While some make sure not to disturb others by using earphones, others play content aloud. For such passengers, Chennai Metro has introduced a new rule.
Chennai Metro Makes Earphone Use Compulsory
In the latest update, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has issued a fresh advisory for commuters. As per The Indian Express, according to the advisory, it is now compulsory for passengers in Chennai to use earphones or headphones while consuming any audio content inside metro trains and on station premises.
The main reason behind this advisory is to reduce noise pollution and ensure a comfortable environment for passengers. And it does make sense. Playing audio aloud can disturb passengers sitting or standing nearby, affecting their travel experience.

What Is The Fine Amount?
Don’t take this advisory lightly, as it comes with a fine. The Indian Express reported that if you fail to carry earphones and play loud music in the Chennai Metro, you could face a penalty of up to ₹2,500.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) changed the rules regarding penalties for certain offences in metro systems. In an official Gazette notification issued on June 19, 2026, the ministry announced that the fine under Section 59 has been updated because of changes made through the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026.
The metro authorities have also requested the commuters to not cross the yellow line while waiting for the metro to arrive. With the updated rules, metro authorities want to ensure that the journey is comfortable for everyone. This also serves as a reminder to be mindful of fellow passengers.
