Indian travellers can continue to visit Thailand without a visa, the Thai government confirmed on Tuesday, putting an end to uncertainty surrounding the country’s visa-free entry policy. The announcement comes months after a proposal to withdraw visa-free access reportedly led to a dip in tourist arrivals from India. Although the proposal was never implemented, it created confusion among travellers planning trips to the Southeast Asian nation. Want to know more? Read on!

Thailand To Allow Visa-Free Entry To Indians

As per a report by India Today, however, Thailand has reduced the maximum visa-free stay for Indian citizens from 60 days to 30 days. Thailand’s Tourism Minister, Surasak Phancharoenworakul, said the revised policy reflects the travel patterns of Indian visitors while continuing to support the country’s tourism industry.

“If problems arise from this measure in the future, the government can review it then,” Surasak was quoted as saying by Bloomberg.

Earlier this year, Thailand’s Cabinet approved a proposal to reduce the number of visa-exempt countries from 93 to 54, with a 30-day stay limit. While the proposal has not been fully implemented, India remains on the list of countries eligible for visa-free entry. Croatia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Malta and the Maldives will also continue to receive 30-day visa-free access.

Why Did Thailand Revise Its Visa Policy?

The changes come as the Thai government steps up efforts to prevent misuse of the visa-free programme by foreign nationals allegedly involved in illegal activities, including unauthorised employment and businesses operating in violation of visa conditions.

The revised policy also addresses concerns raised by local businesses in popular tourist destinations over long-term visitors misusing visa exemptions.
