Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai to inaugurate several infrastructure projects worth crores. During his visit, he also offered prayers at the historic Jalakandeswarar Temple. So, what makes this temple in Tamil Nadu so special?

On his recent visit to Tamil Nadu on October 11, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the iconic Jalakandeswarar Temple. He was accompanied by actor Vijay Thalapathy and Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar. Sharing a glimpse of his visit, PM Modi took to X and shared photos, revealing what he prayed for. He wrote, “Prayed for the happiness, good health and prosperity of the people of our nation.”

During his visit, PM Modi performed the aarti and offered prayers to Lord Ram and Sita Maa. He also performed a puja to seek their blessings. In the video, you can hear the priests chanting prayers during the ceremony.

Why Is This Temple A Must-Visit?

The famous Jalakandeswarar Temple in Tamil Nadu is dedicated to Lord Shiva. You will find this beautiful temple inside the historic Vellore Fort in Vellore. Here, you will be awestruck by its Dravidian-style architecture. This temple has a 100-foot-high gopuram. Another highlight of this temple is the Kalyana Mandapam. Here, one sculpture creates an interesting illusion, appearing as an elephant or a bull depending on the angle you look at it from. You must also see the large water moat called Agazhi that surrounds the temple. 

What Are The Timings?

You can visit this temple between 6:30 AM and 1 PM, and then from 5 PM to 8:30 PM. If you’re travelling by flight, you can land at Chennai International Airport, which is around 135 km from the temple. If travelling by train, Vellore Town Railway Station is around 1.5 km from Vellore Fort, while Katpadi Junction is around 5–7.5 km away.
