Nearly two months after its inauguration by PM Narendra Modi, the much-awaited, state-of-the-art new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) commenced commercial operations on February 22. Cementing Guwahati’s position as the primary aviation gateway to the strategically vital Northeast region, the new ₹4,000-crore terminal at LGBIA in Guwahati commenced commercial operations. According to BusinessLine, the commencement ceremony was attended by Himanta Biswa Sarma and Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL).

To mark the occasion, a ceremonial boarding pass was presented to the first departing passenger from Guwahati’s new airport terminal, while an Akasa Air flight arriving from Mumbai became one of the first arrivals at the new terminal facility. It is to be noted that the LGBIA is one of eight airports across India operated by the Adani Group.

1. Interiors Inspired By Assam’s Biodiversity & Cultural Heritage

As soon as you step into Guwahati Airport’s new terminal, it feels like stepping straight into the natural beauty of Assam. The design draws heavily from the state’s lush landscapes, traditional motifs, and indigenous art forms, especially its bamboo-accented interiors and orchid-inspired elements.

2. Built Using 140 Metric Tons of Bamboo

Designed by architect Nuru Karim, the new terminal design is an ode to Assam’s kopou phool (foxtail orchid), and more than 140 metric tons (MT) of bamboo have been used to replicate it at the Guwahati Airport.

3. Seamless Domestic & International Connectivity

According to The Economic Times, both domestic and international flights are likely to operate from the new terminal starting in March. Meanwhile, the old terminal will be converted into a cargo hub.

4. Designed To Handle High Passenger Footfall

With modern infrastructure and advanced passenger-processing systems, the Integrated Terminal-2 Building will be able to handle 13.1 million passengers per year. Currently, it handles more than 130 aircraft traffic movements daily.

5. Strengthening Northeast India’s Global Links

Beyond serving as a regional hub, the terminal enhances connectivity between Northeast India, the rest of the country, and Southeast Asia. It connects 21 domestic destinations and three international routes–Bangkok, Paro and Singapore.
