Why Did Bengaluru-Delhi Air India Flight Trigger A Full Emergency Before Landing In Delhi?

An Air India flight from Bengaluru to Delhi recently declared a full emergency at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi on Thursday, after the crew received a fire warning from one of the aircraft’s engines during the final approach for landing. Read on to know more about it.

Air India Flight Declares Emergency At Delhi Airport

As per a report by the Hindustan Times, AI 2802, an Airbus A30 with 171 passengers onboard landed safely on runway 29R at around 9.30 pm. Post landing, the plane was towed away, and runway operations started again at 10:18 pm.

As per Air India’s official X account, the emergency was declared after the cockpit crew got an alert indicating a possible engine fire while the aircraft was preparing for landing at the Delhi airport. The airline later also confirmed that the warning turned out to be true.

Sharing a statement on their official X account, the airline stated that the crew followed all standard operating norms before safely landing the aircraft. Passengers and crew members later were landed normally. The airline wrote, “Air India is immediately initiating a full investigation into the cause of the incident in coordination with the relevant regulatory authorities. We are committed to sharing further verified information as soon as it becomes available. The safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority.”

Two Air India Cases In 24 Hours

In an earlier statement, an Air India wrote, “We are aware of an incident involving flight AI2802 operating from Bengaluru to Delhi on 21 May 2026. The aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew are safe. We are currently gathering additional information and are working closely with the relevant authorities. Further updates will be shared as more details become available.”

The emergency landing came few hours after another Air India flight was grounded after a tail-strike incident at Bengaluru airport earlier on the same day.

The flight was an A321 operating flight AI2651 from Delhi to Bengaluru carrying 181 passengers. The airline also stated that the aircraft experienced a tail strike during landing and was later withdrawn for in depth inspection.
