Woman In China Suffers Severe Throat Problem After Eating Hotpot
A 42-year-old woman from China’s Hunan province developed a massive 8-centimetre ulcer in her oesophagus after hurriedly eating food directly from a boiling hotpot. According to the South China Morning Post, the woman was having hotpot with friends when she quickly swallowed the food without waiting for it to cool.
Soon after the meal, she started experiencing severe chest pain and a strong burning sensation in her throat. Thinking it was temporary discomfort, she drank ice-cold water to calm the pain. However, instead of helping, it made the condition worse overnight. By the next morning, she reportedly struggled even to swallow water and rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Why Is Cold Water Not Advised Soon After A Hot Meal?
Doctors performed an endoscopy and discovered a large ulcer in her oesophagus. As per NDTV, reports revealed that the ulcer measured around 8 centimetres, which is nearly one-third the length of an adult food pipe.
As per medical experts explained that the lining of the oesophagus is very sensitive to extreme heat. While many people assume the throat can handle high temperatures, doctors said the oesophagus usually tolerates only around 50 to 60°C. Freshly cooked hotpot items can often reach temperatures between 80 and 90°C.
Doctors also warned against drinking ice-cold water immediately after consuming very hot food. The sudden temperature changes may irritate already damaged tissues instead of providing relief.
So, avoid eating extremely hot meals, and if you do, don’t drink cold water immediately after!
