The elephant rides at Amber Fort are restarting with new prices. For the first time in 13 years, the Department of Archaeology and Museums has declared the new rates. The authorities had decided to halt these services for some time to check all safety measures before allowing tourists again. This sudden decision affected elephant owners and tourist activity at the fort. Under the new rates, both domestic and international visitors now have to pay ₹2,500 per ride.

The Times of India reported that Ballu Khan, a mahout who works with the elephants, revealed that the last rate revision for rides happened in 2012. The price increase was long overdue, and it’s helpful because feeding elephants is expensive. In winter, elephants usually take five rounds a day, and in summer they take two to three rounds depending on the temperature. Meeting these expenses had become difficult, so the new rate is meant to help cover the costs.

On the other hand, Abdul, one of the elephant owners, also revealed to TOI that the cost of feeding elephants reaches up to ₹4,500. He added that the temporary halt caused a huge financial strain, and restarting the rides will help owners recover.
