If Europe was on your mind this summer, soaring airfares might make you rethink your travel plans. Ticket prices on major long-haul routes between Asia and Europe have surged by up to 560% this month and are likely to remain high over the next few months. Read on to find out more.

Airfares Surge On Major Long-Haul Routes Between Asia & Europe

According to The Economic Times, airfares on major routes between Asia and Europe are witnessing a sharp upswing. This is putting pressure on travellers and reshaping travel plans, especially with the peak summer travel season almost here. Multiple factors, including rising fuel costs, airspace restrictions, and limited capacity, are driving the surge.

As demand remains strong and operational challenges persist, fares are expected to stay high, particularly on busy long-haul routes. Data shared by Alton Aviation Consultancy highlights the ongoing West Asia conflict as a key reason for this. June travel has already been impacted, with fares on major Asia-Pacific to Europe routes nearly 70% higher than a year ago.

Alton’s analysis, based on data from Cirium and online travel agencies, shows that a Sydney-London ticket now averages over $1,500 (₹1,40,800)—this is almost double the price during the same period last year. These fares include both direct and one-stop flights, including those transiting through Gulf hubs.

Steep Increase In Flight Fares

It’s not just Asia-Europe routes; airfares from Europe to Asia have also surged, with June prices rising by as much as 79% year-on-year. According to The Economic Times, some long-haul routes are now nearly three times more expensive than last year.

This sharp increase is largely because routes connecting Asia and Europe have been the most affected, as many flights pass through major Middle Eastern hubs such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha. In fact, this corridor typically handles nearly one-third of the annual air traffic between the two regions.

According to the report, airfares have surged sharply across key routes. Tickets from Hong Kong to London Heathrow are now averaging $3,318 (₹3,11,916), marking a 560% jump from the previous month. Fares from Bangkok to Frankfurt have risen 505% to $2,870 (₹2,69,842), while Sydney to London prices are up 429%.
