Industrialist Anand Mahindra is back with his #SundayWanderer series, and this time, he brought the spotlight on two forts in Rajasthan that, he believes, deserve more recognition. Emphasising the need to “tell their stories differently,” he urged travellers to explore these historic sites that are often overlooked despite their rich heritage and stunning architecture. Can you guess these sites?
Anand Mahindra Wants To Revisit Chittorgarh Fort
I visited the Chittorgarh Fort when I was 10, on a family holiday.
Have never been back. But I should.
Because when I checked online, it turns out it’s the largest fort in the world!
Approximate Global Ranking:
🥇 Chittorgarh Fort, India ~700 acres (2.8 sq. km)
🥈 Kumbhalgarh… pic.twitter.com/zqDtIeTPIW— anand mahindra (@anandmahindra) October 12, 2025
In his latest tweet, Anand Mahindra mentioned visiting the Chittorgarh Fort when he was only 10 during a family holiday. He further added that he never revisited the fort, but said he should! He further added that while researching the fort, he got to know some interesting facts about it.
“Because when I checked online, it turns out it’s the largest fort in the world! Approximate Global Ranking – 1. Chittorgarh Fort, India ~700 acres (2.8 sq. km); 2. Kumbhalgarh Fort, India ~1,100 acres (4.5 sq. km), walls 36 km long; 3. Nanjing City Wall, China,” he mentioned in the tweet.
The tweet further revealed, “Yes, Kumbhalgarh is the second largest in the world. Chittorgarh and Kumbhalgarh are fort cities, not boundary walls. They enclosed self-sufficient communities and were built to withstand sieges, not to demarcate empires.”

Feels These Forts Deserve More Attention
Noticing the low tourist footfall at Chittorgarh Fort and Kumbhalgarh Fort, Anand Mahindra expressed his disappointment that these historic sites rarely feature on the ‘must-visit’ lists of global travellers. He also pointed out that they aren’t even part of Rajasthan’s popular “Golden Circuit,” which includes Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and Udaipur.
“We need to tell their stories differently: A kingdom that refused to yield. A fort that never fell. Illustrate these stories through specialised experiences: sunset drives along the ramparts, private storytelling sessions, and expanded comfortable accommodation,” he shared his two cents.

We agree with Anand Mahindra on this! India’s rich cultural heritage deserves wider recognition and shouldn’t be limited to just a few famous destinations. With such a vast landscape and countless experiences to explore, many incredible places often go unnoticed simply because they don’t make it to popular ‘must-visit’ lists. So, if you’re planning to explore Rajasthan soon, make sure you add these forts to your itinerary.
