Delhi-NCR is currently reeling under intense heat, and according to the IMD’s latest predictions, there seems to be little relief in sight. With maximum temperatures crossing 45°C and heatwave conditions worsening, the weather department has issued an Orange Alert for extreme heat and “loo” conditions across the region. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
Heatwave & Loo Conditions Take Over Delhi-NCR
According to the Hindustan Times, temperatures are expected to soar across Delhi-NCR, with the weather department forecasting heatwave conditions in the region until May 26. As per the seven-day forecast, the Capital is also likely to experience strong surface winds during the afternoon and evening hours.
Daytime temperatures are expected to remain above 44°C throughout the week, while minimum temperatures may hover around 28°C. With no pre-monsoon activity predicted in the near future, residents are unlikely to get any immediate relief from the scorching weather.
The intense heat is being linked to dry and hot winds blowing in from Pakistan and the Thar Desert, which are expected to push temperatures higher across several states, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
HT also reported that residents in Noida and Ghaziabad received weather alerts on their phones on Wednesday, warning them about winds that could feel “worse than loo” conditions.

What To Eat & Drink To Stay Safe
With Delhi-NCR continuing to face intense heatwave conditions, it’s important to stay safe and hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and eating foods that help your body cope with the extreme weather.
First and foremost, water should be your best friend during such conditions. Apart from regular water intake, you can also consume:
- Coconut water
- Lemon water/nimbu pani
- Buttermilk/chaas
- Fresh fruit juices (without excess sugar)
- Electrolyte drinks (if you feel dehydrated)
You can also include fruits with high water content in your diet, as they help cool the body naturally. Some of the best options are:
- Watermelon
- Muskmelon
- Cucumber
- Oranges
- Grapes
- Litchi
At the same time, it’s best to avoid heavy and oily foods, as they can make your body feel hotter and sluggish. Instead, opt for lighter meals such as:
- Curd and yoghurt
- Salads
- Khichdi or light dals
- Seasonal vegetables
- Mint-based dishes and chutneys
You should also avoid caffeinated and alcoholic drinks, as they can increase dehydration. Additionally, do not step out in extreme heat on an empty stomach, as it may lead to weakness, dizziness, or exhaustion.
