The 91 km Hanle-Chumar road in Ladakh connects the high-altitude village of Hanle with the remote border settlement of Chumar along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Giving tourists splendid views of the mountains, the road is built at heights ranging from 14,500 to 17,200 feet, and crosses the challenging Salsa La Pass, reported Moneycontrol. The authorities have decided to open this road because it can improve connectivity in one of the toughest terrains in the world.

Along with enhancing connectivity, the road will help both locals and tourists reach remote areas more easily. According to the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI), the road will serve two main purposes–supporting the movement of the armed forces along the border and improving access for residents and tourists. Thus, tourists will now be able to reach famous spots like Hanle Observatory, Kyun Tso Lake, Chilling Tso Lake, and Tso Moriri much more easily. The authorities also believe that the new road will boost not only local but international tourism in the region.
