Traffic jams at airport pick-up zones are common as vehicles often wait longer than permitted. To address this, Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport introduced new arrival pick-up rules. However, the move has taken a drastic turn, triggering widespread passenger complaints and protests by cab drivers. Scroll down to find out!

Passengers’ Complaints About New BLR Airport Pick-Up Rules

Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) introduced new “overstay” rules at the arrival pick-up areas to reduce traffic congestion. These rules started on December 11 at Terminal 2 and on December 13 at Terminal 1. Under the new system, private vehicles can wait for free for only eight minutes. After that, drivers must pay ₹150 if they stay for 8 to 13 minutes, and ₹300 for 13 to 18 minutes. If a vehicle stays longer than 18 minutes, it can be towed to the nearest police station, along with extra fines and towing charges.

However, many passengers were unhappy with how the new rules were rolled out. As per CNBCTV18, several travellers arriving at Terminal 1 said they had to walk between 800 metres and 1.5 km with their luggage to reach taxi pick-up points.

People complained about unclear signboards, not enough luggage trolleys, and no staff to help. Families travelling with elderly people, children, or those with mobility issues said the long walk was tiring and confusing. Some passengers also claimed that stroller services refused to carry their luggage to the faraway pick-up areas.

Cab Drivers Protest Against New Rules

On Tuesday morning, cab drivers protested against the new rules and blocked the road near the Sadahalli toll gate, causing traffic disruption. Police later cleared the protest. Later, cab drivers announced another protest at Freedom Park.

In talks with The Indian Express, cab drivers said the rules ignore real delays like flight timings, security checks, baggage collection, and unfamiliar terminal layouts. They argued that drivers are being penalised for factors beyond their control.

We hope the situation gets under control soon!
