Bengaluru is currently planning a second international airport to ease pressure on the existing Kempegowda International Airport. Harohalli Emerges As The Leading Contender For 2nd Airport In Bengaluru
According to India Today, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar recently announced that Bengaluru’s second airport will come up in South Bengaluru. Officials have been asked to prepare a proposal for the Central Government after identifying a suitable site. Notably, for the second airport in the city, officials want a site where land costs are low, the terrain is not too hilly, and the project is technically feasible.
The Deputy Chief Minister does not want a site where villages or residents get disturbed. Three sites have been inspected by the authorities. These include two on Kanakapura Road near Harohalli in South Bengaluru and one on Kunigal Road in Nelamangala to the west of the city. According to reports, Harohalli is emerging as the front-runner for the airport.

The New Airport Is Expected To Ease Congestion At KIA
According to The South First, Harohalli is the leading contender for Bengaluru’s second greenfield airport. It is located about 40 km from the city centre. A site has not been finalised yet, but it is expected to be selected after a feasibility assessment. The project is reportedly being planned to ease overcrowding at Kempegowda International Airport, which sees heavy passenger traffic every day.
The second greenfield airport is expected to be completed by 2032-33. Travellers living in the southern parts of the city will have better accessibility, avoiding the long drive to the current airport in Devanahalli. The new airport may also be bigger in size and could have more advanced facilities.
