The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) in Mumbai has now taken strict action to suspend the food licences of five elite clubs in the city. The action follows a citywide inspection drive to check serious hygiene and licensing breaches at restaurants and eateries. Five Mumbai Sports Clubs Face Strict Action
The decision by Maharashtra’s Food and Drugs Administration comes after officials cancelled the food licences of Mumbai’s iconic K Rustom & Co ice cream parlour and Poornima Restaurant due to hygiene lapses. Five prominent sports clubs in Mumbai are now facing similar action for alleged violations of hygiene norms, including cockroach infestations, poor sanitation and unsafe food storage practices.
According to India Today, the establishments facing licence suspension are The Cricket Club of India Ltd, RK Juhu Gymkhana, The Aparna Juhu Gymkhana, MIG Cricket Club, Bandra East, and The Willingdon Sports Club. These places were found violating provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Apart from this, the Goregaon Sports Club in Malad West has also been asked to stop food business operations. The establishment was operating without a valid licence.

Cockroach Infestation, Unsafe Food Storage & More
According to India Today, the Cricket Club of India Ltd faced serious issues as inspectors found live cockroaches and fly infestation in food handling areas. The establishment was also following poor waste disposal practices, with water dripping onto food stored in cold storage units. Inspectors also found clogged drains and the storage of rotten vegetables and expired food items.
At RK Juhu Gymkhana, the FDA found damaged walls and ceilings, improper food storage temperatures, and no records of frying oil usage. Food handlers were also not following basic hygiene practices like wearing gloves, caps and aprons. Talking about The Aparna Juhu Gymkhana, food inspectors found rusted cooking equipment, insect entry points, and improper segregation of raw, cooked, vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items.
Furthermore, the MIG Cricket Club was operating with an invalid FSSAI licence. The Willingdon Sports Club was also found violating food safety norms with unclean floors and improper cleaning schedules.
